The Strand Theatre: A Decade of Memories and Community Impact

As someone who has lived and worked in the Ohio Valley for many years, the Strand Theatre in Moundsville holds a special place in my heart. This historic venue, which has been a cultural hub for over a century, is more than just a place to see a show. It’s a symbol of community, resilience, and shared experiences. Over the last decade, the Strand has not only maintained its charm but has also been a key part of preserving the artistic spirit of our region.

As a partner with the law firm of Gold, Khourey & Turak, we are proud to support the Strand Theatre and consider its members dear friends. Throughout the year, we have the privilege of sponsoring several events at the Strand, including beloved family movies during Halloween and Christmas.

A Glimpse into the Past: The Strand’s Early Days

The Strand Theatre first opened its doors in 1920, originally serving as a vaudeville house before transitioning into a movie theater during the golden age of cinema. For many in Moundsville, it was the place where families gathered on the weekends, where friends met for a matinee, and where first dates happened under the dim lights of the silver screen.

However, as times changed, the theater went through its share of struggles. By the 1990s, like many small-town cinemas, the Strand faced declining attendance and the realities of competing with modern multiplexes. It wasn’t until 2009, when a group of dedicated local citizens formed the Strand Theatre Preservation Society, that the theater’s fortunes began to turn around.

A New Beginning: The Strand’s Revitalization

In 2010, the Strand officially reopened its doors after an extensive renovation that restored much of its historic charm while updating the facility for modern audiences. Walking into the theater today, it’s hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. The original marquee, lit up at night, serves as a beacon of the town’s commitment to preserving its cultural landmarks.

What makes the Strand special is not just its architecture or its history—it’s the people who breathe life into it. Over the last ten years, the Strand has become more than just a theater. It’s a gathering place for the community, a venue for live performances, and a space where local artists can showcase their talents.

A Decade of Memories: What the Strand Means to Our Community

In the past decade, I’ve had the pleasure of attending a variety of events at the Strand Theatre—each one leaving its own lasting impression. From the community plays put on by local high school students to holiday concerts that bring together families from across Moundsville, the Strand continues to be a hub of activity and joy.

One of my favorite memories from the Strand is the annual showing of It’s a Wonderful Life around Christmas time. There’s something magical about watching that film in such a historic venue, surrounded by people who share the same love for the movie. It’s more than just a screening—it’s a tradition, and it brings the entire community together in the spirit of the holidays.

The theater has also hosted countless local performances, including school plays, talent shows, and concerts. It’s incredible to see the younger generation take the stage at the Strand, just as performers did nearly a century ago. I’ve watched as friends’ children, nervous before their big debut, take a deep breath and deliver performances that leave the audience in awe. The Strand gives these young performers a platform to build their confidence and showcase their abilities, and the community comes out in full force to support them.

Community Impact: The Strand’s Role in Moundsville’s Revival

Beyond the memories, the Strand has played a vital role in revitalizing downtown Moundsville. The reopening of the theater brought renewed attention to the area, encouraging new businesses to open nearby and boosting foot traffic for local shops and restaurants. It’s become a centerpiece for the community, not just for entertainment, but for economic growth as well.

Over the past ten years, the Strand has hosted everything from classic film festivals to live music performances, and even special guest speakers. These events bring people from all over the Ohio Valley, showcasing the best our region has to offer and drawing attention to Moundsville’s cultural significance.

What’s particularly special about the Strand is how it’s managed to strike a balance between honoring its rich history and embracing the future. With state-of-the-art sound systems, comfortable seating, and a wide range of programming, it caters to all generations while preserving the magic of an old-world theater.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the Strand Theatre

As I reflect on the past ten years of memories at the Strand, I’m also excited about what the future holds. The Strand has proven that it can adapt to changing times while still maintaining its core identity. With continued community support, I believe the theater will thrive for decades to come, continuing to serve as a space where new memories are made and where the arts can flourish in our region.

If you haven’t had the chance to visit the Strand Theatre recently, I encourage you to stop by for a show or event. Whether it’s a film screening, a live concert, or a local play, there’s always something happening at the Strand—and it’s a reminder of how important cultural landmarks like this are to keeping the heart of our community alive.

The Strand Theatre isn’t just part of our past; it’s an integral part of our present and future. I’m proud to have been part of its story over the last decade, and I look forward to many more years of memories.
