What Happened at Camp Lejeune?

(U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs)

From the 1950s through the 1980s, people living or working at the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune were potentially exposed to drinking water contaminated with industrial solvents, benzene, and other chemicals.  Drinking-water systems that supplied two areas of housing were contaminated.

What was in the drinking water?

Two on-base water wells that were shut down in 1985 had these chemicals:

  • Trichloroethylene (TCE)
  • Perchloroethylene (PCE)
  • Benzene
  • Vinyl chloride
  • Other compounds

VA has established a presumptive service connection for Veterans, Reservists, and National Guard members exposed to contaminants in the water supply at Camp Lejeune who later developed one of the following eight diseases:

  • Adult leukemia
  • Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Parkinson’s disease

Who is covered?

  • Veterans
  • Reservists
  • Guardsmen

What kind of benefits may you qualify for?

  • Health care
  • Compensation (payments)
