Prempro
Side Effects
Under the guideline of the federal government, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Insitute (NHLBI) launched a study to determine the long term effects of Prempro. The study was originally planned for 8 years, but was stopped after 5 years when researchers determined the overall health risks exceeded benefits.
The NHLBI study consisted of 16,608 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 79. On May 31, 2002, the Data and Safety Monitoring Board made the decision to terminate the
clinical trial. The board was alarmed at the increases in heart problems and breast cancer among those women who were given Prempro.
According to the NHLBI, women who were given Prempro were more likely to develop serious problems compared to those in the placebo group. The research found:
- 26% increase in breast cancer
- 41% increase in strokes
- 100% increase in blood clots
- 22% increase in incidents of cardiovascular disease
A follow-up study released a year later by the AMA also found increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
