Nursing Home Neglect
One of the most important decisions a family may have to make is whether to place a loved one in a nursing home. Most often the family realizes they can no longer provide the necessary care their loved one requires, and there is no other choice. When the decision is made to place your family member under the care and supervision of a nursing home, you expect the facility will provide optimum care, however, this is not always the case.
While some nursing homes provide excellent care, others subject residents to needless suffering and even death. When a nursing home fails to provide treatment, care, goods or services necessary to preserve a resident’s health, safety, or welfare, and the resident suffers an injury, the facility may be negligent. Examples of nursing home negligence may include:
- Failure to provide food or water, or failure to prevent malnutrition or dehydration
- Failure to assist in personal hygiene
- Failure to provide safe, clean and decent living conditions
- Failure to provide adequate treatment and services for residents
- Failure to provide appropriate supervision and assistive devices to prevent accidents
- Failure to provide adequate medical care and acquire and dispense proper medications, as well as failure to ensure that residents are free from serious medical errors
- Failure to supply sufficient staffing of nurses
- Failure to prevent the deterioration of the patient’s ability to perform basic functions
- Failure to maintain or improve the patient’s quality of life
- Failure to administer the facility in a way that attains or maintains the highest physical, mental, and psychological well-being of each patient
