Lumberjack Exhibition Nets $2000 for Literacy

September 30, 2003

A group of professional lumberjacks recently awarded Literacy Volunteers of Marshall & Ohio Counties a check for $2,000 to further local literacy tutoring and assistance. The donation was the result of wood carving exhibitions performed by the lumberjacks at the annual Marshall County Riverfront Festival on Sept. 6 & 7. The exhibitions were the first of its kind at the festival.

The lumberjacks thrilled the crowd with springboard, standing block chop, hot saw, and single buck competitions, and produced a number of carvings that were auctioned off at the end of each day. Proceeds from the auctions benefitted the local literacy volunteers.

Sponsors of the events included: Tim Tasker of Green Acres Power Sports in Glen Dale, Belmont Equipment Sales in St. Clairsville, Kenny Hupp's Garage in Woodsfield, Ace Home Center in New Martinsville, and Handy Andy's Power Equipment in Barnesville.

Lumberjack participants included: Mike Sullivan of Winsted, CT; Arden "Jamie" Cogar, Jr. of Charleston, WV; Mike Hopkins, a Stihl representative from Cincinnati, OH; Jeff Rosco of St. Clairsville, OH; Kirby Stanforth of Marietta, OH and Bill Bolon of Woodsfield, OH.

Tim Tasker's son, Stephen, also decided to sell hats donated by Stihl and Green Acres, with the money raised donated to Literacy Volunteers.
