Junior League of Wheeling Awards Original story written by Sheely Hanson, Wheeling Intelligencer Staff Writer The Junior League of Wheeling, Inc. recognized eight local youths for their volunteer work during the 2003 High School Voluntarism Award ceremony held at Wilson Lodge in Oglebay. The event, presented by the Junior League of Wheeling and the Wheeling News-Register and Intelligencer, included a luncheon in the Ihlenfeld Dining Room and an awards presentation. Shawn Turak, Junior League of Wheeling President, told those at the luncheon the students' "accomplishments are many and impressive." "A common thread is woven among you," Turak commented to the recipients, referring to "seeds of greatness born out of your volunteer experiences." "We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility," Turak added. Turak quoted the late Fred Rogers, whose Pittsburgh-based television program was a favorite among young people for many generation. Rogers once said that, "when we look for what's best in the person we happen to be with, we're doing what God would do." "Deep down we know what's important in this life is not winning for ourselves, it's winning for others," Rogers also said, according to Turak. Turak closed by commending the students for "your service, dedication and passion for volunteering."
